Japanese Sign Language 日本手話

English & Japanese Text by Carrie Chan

We usually use body language to get to communicate with people who don't share a common speaking language, but how well can you do it? Sign languages, which are mostly based on gestures showing the corresponding actions or subjects, may help in improving your skills in expressing yourself apart from being just a language used to communicate with deaf people.

共通の話す言葉を持っていない人とコミュニケーションを取ろうと思う時、いつもボディランゲージが出てくると思いますが、うまく行けない時もよくありますよね。手話を勉強することの一つのメリットは自分の表現力を向上できるのではないかと思います。なぜかというと、手話は手や指の動きによって実際の動作や物事を具体的に表現するようのが基本だからです。

During the workshop, Japanese sign language on simple words, numbers, colours and hiragana were taught. Every participants can now communicate with each other in Japanese Sign Language, we can use hiragana to express what we wanna say even we do not know the exact sign language for that specific word.

今回のワークショップでは、簡単な単語、挨拶、数字、カラー、平仮名の手話を教えていただきました。参加者の皆さんは今では簡単な手話でコミュニケーションを取ることができ、相応の手話の単語が分からなくても平仮名の手話で言いたいことを伝えるようになりました。

There is a simple quiz game which helped participants to memorize the sign language. Participants were also divided into pairs to practice with each other. The two hours passed so fast where we were all busying with twisting our fingers and elbow as we were practicing the sign language.

最初に100個ぐらいの手話を覚えるのは大変ですが、クイズゲームやペアでの「対話」によって、実際に教えてもらった手話を練習することで結構覚えるようになったと思います。手や指を動きながら日本手話を覚えるたびに、2時間のワークショップもとても早く過ぎたと感じました。

As a workshop at beginner level, it was a very successful one on teaching participants some useful basic sign languages, and it also aroused participants' interest about the language. Thank you Danny for the patience!

初心者向けのワークショップとして、基本手話の習得や興味が深くなったことで大変満足できるワークショップと思います。ダニーさん、ありがとうございました!

(Postponed to April) Soba Making @ 苔香居 Taikoukyo, A Time Capsule of an Ancient Japanese Home (#45)

The entrance of Taikoukyo

No matter how long you have been living in Japan, apparently there are still many hidden treasures yet to be discovered. This time we will take a time flip and lead everyone to visit a 400 years old house in Kamikatsura, Kyoto.

Through the stone pathed garden, it leads to the main building.

Taikoukyo is the house’s nick name belonging to the Yamaguchi family, and it was registered as a cultural heritage 12 years ago. Tai means moss in Japanese and Taikoukyo means a residence filled the fragrance of moss. The Yamaguchi family has well preserved this old house up until now at their 20th generations, and it was used as a residence for the family until 2003. Since the family has relocated, it is now occasionally opened to the public under very special arrangements.

A view of the Japanese moss garden from the main guest room. Can you see the dog?

The garden is filled with many types of mosses. They are grown naturally without artificial care or watering.

Here we were, making a preliminary tour of the house.

We Are One organizers will guide you around the house and garden, while groups will take turn to experience soba-making at the traditional kitchen using firewood and charkol. Rice made from the Meiji-era-furnace, some side dishes and Japanese Tea will also be served. Let’s enjoy a Sunday afternoon under the moss-filled roof of Taikoukyo, immersed in Japanese history and experience its rich culture in this hidden treasure.

苔香居は山口家住宅に茶人であった先々代が付けた庵名で、苔の香りのする住まいとの意が込められています。400年前に庄屋として務めた山口家は20世代を経て、2003年まで苔香居を住まいとして使用し続けておりました。2003年に隠居場を別棟に持ったため、現在は限定しつつも苔香居は公開可能となりました。

A pot cover made of wood

We will be using this to cook rice for everyone.

Besides the kitchen there is an ancient well. According to the owner it is as deep as 10m.
We will be using this well water for cooking and making tea.

Japanese umbrellas made of paper remain functional withstanding the test of time.

Taikoukyo was registered as Culture Heritage some 12 years ago but it is not fully open to public.

Chinese Lessons for Deaf Japan

The letter C   指文字 C             photo from deafjapan.com

On 10th January, We Are One conducted the first trial Chinese lesson for members of Deaf Japan. Deaf Japan is a non-profit organizattion that provides a platform for the deaf community to gather with various events and activities. It is headed by Danny who is a CODA (children of deaf adults). One of his goal for Deaf Japan is to make sign language cool.

It is a very interesting and fresh experience for me to conduct Chinese lessons for deaf students. Although they may not be able to hear, they are nonetheless interested to know the pronunciation of the Chinese characters. Hence, I need to give the Katakana together with the pinyin on top of each characters.

I must admit that I do not know any sign language at all, and I thought I could only give the explanation by writing in Japanese on the white board. However, to my surprise, I was able to communicate a fair bit by using hand signs and body languages, despite that fact that they were not at all correct sign languages. Luckily, one of the students, Yamawaki-san who is non-deaf was able to help me communicate with the rest as an interpreter.

By the end of the session, I was glad that not only the students had gained some knowledge about Chinese from me, I also picked up a couple of sign languages such as saying "thank you" both in Japanese and American sign languages.

The Chinese lesson at Deaf Japan is held every Monday from 8pm to 9pm. Whether you are a deaf person or not, you are welcome to join us. After all, We Are One aims to bring people of difference background together, recognize, share and learn from one another. I must say that
We Are One has moved another step forward towards the We Are One Spirit.
