About Kamo River
Unlike other rivers in Japan, the Kamo River is not buried in concrete, and it has been embraced by locals. There is constant activity along the river.Cycling is technically not permitted – with signs that threaten fines of up to 50,000 JPY - but there is ample space and the edict is completely ignored.
As it should be.On the weekends and in good weather, the river is used by many: for picnics, strolling, fishing, dating, tennis, soccer, and cycling. The paths begin in the far north of the city and stretch all the way along both banks into the downtown area south of Shijo, ending below Shichijo. However, on the downtown side (west) of the river the path becomes very rough south of Oike.
Moreover, at that point, there are only steps for getting back up to street level. The on/off ramps that can be used by cyclists end around Nijo Dori. Farther in towards Sanjo and Shijo, and they are few and far between. Both banks of the river are used by commuters and recreational cyclists and local kids.
The main river in Kyoto, the Kamo, has wide walking paths on both sides and is one of the real treasures of the city. (Source: http://www.cyclekyoto.com/)
The Kyoto Prefectural Botanical Garden, situated on expansive grounds measuring 240,000 m2, was founded in 1924. The garden faces the Kamogawa River and Kitayama-dori Street. With approximately 12,000 different kinds of plants, flower gardens, an conseyvatory, the Useful Plants Garden, an expansive lawn and a children's playground, it is one of the greatest botanical gardens in all of Japan.
Kamigamo Shrine(上賀茂神社Kamigamo Jinja?) is an importantShinto sanctuary on the banks of the Kamo River in north Kyoto, first founded in 678.[1] Its formal name is the Kamo-wakeikazuchi Shrine(賀茂別雷神社Kamo-wakeikazuchi jinja?).[2]
It is one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan and is one of the seventeen Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto which have been designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The term Kamo-jinjain Japanese is a general reference to Shimogamo Shrine and Kamigamo Shrine, the traditionally linked Kamo shrines of Kyoto.[3] The Kamo-jinja serve the function of protecting Kyoto from malign influences.[4]
You only will need a bicycle that works well, such as the tires are pumped up, brakes that can stop your bike, and the chain will not fall off easily. Mamacharin, foldable bicycles are welcome too. We can also rent a bicycle for you from a rental shop near by. Please indicate your choice of bicycle in your registration and come 1 hour in advance to rent the bicycle.
For Sportive cycling, you need a bicycle that can keep up at 30km/h.
How fast do we go?
Leisure: 15~20km/h, Sportive: 20~30km/k
For Leisure tours, speed is secondary. We will match the speed to the group. When there are too many riders, we will separate into smaller groups with a group leader in each. We will slow down or wait for each other. But we also need to keep the pace so we can reach our destinations on schedule. in any case, no one will be left behind.
For Sportive, we will keep the speed under 30km/h. As we go faster, we can cover longer distances and increase our fitness level.
